Shiobara Onsen is a historic hot-spring resort in a forested mountain valley in the north of Nasushiobara. Dating back to the early 9th century, the resort comprises 11 hot-spring areas along the Hōki River, with numerous baths drawing water of different temperatures, mineral compositions and colours. The valley also offers waterfalls, forest walks and suspension bridges, including the 320-m-long Momijidani Suspension Bridge. Shiobara became a popular retreat for writers such as Natsume Sōseki and Ozaki Kōyō in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is about an hour by bus from Nasushiobara Station
