This sightseeing railway runs through the steep, forested valleys of the Kurobe Gorge in the Northern Japanese Alps. The open-sided trolley trains cross more than 20 bridges and pass through over 40 tunnels, offering views of the Kurobe River, cliffs and mountain forests. The full 20-km journey from Unazuki to Keyakidaira takes about 80 minutes each way. The railway normally operates from late April to November, with autumn foliage a major attraction. In 2026, the full route reopened on 1 October following repairs after the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, but access around Keyakidaira remains restricted.
The Kurobe Gorge Railway , or Kurotetsu (黒鉄) for short, is a private, 762 mm narrow gauge railway company operating the Kurobe Gorge Main Line along the Kurobe River in the Kurobe gorge area of Toyama Prefecture, Japan. The railway was built to serve the construction of the Kurobe dam for the Kansai Electric Power Company, which was completed in 1963; Kurotetsu was spun off from the power company in June 1971, but remains a wholly owned subsidiary. At its terminus, the Main Line links to Kurobe Senyō Railway, which is not open to the general public.
