Walk straight north from station, past 7-Eleven and turn left at the stoplight called "Chuo-cho". Walk a few blocks downhill and you will see the big red torii gate on your right.
Awesome waterfalls from the water running down from Mt. Fuji. Take the bus from Fujinomiya station at platform 3 to Shiraito no Taki bus stop. It takes about 30 minutes. Plenty of souvenir shops and vendors. There is a path that takes you to the scenic Shiraito Natural Park (白糸自然公園). Shiraito means "white threads".
田貫湖
Famous for its reflection of Mt. Fuji with the most famous being the "Diamond Fuji", where the sunrise shines at the peak so the mountain and its reflection create a sparkling diamond. The Diamond Fuji can only be seen around April 20 and August 20 (roughly visible for a week before and after these dates) from 06:00-06:15. 4-km path around the lake, good for walking. Can rent a bike. Lots of room for picnic. Camping is available. Take bus from platform 3 at Fujinomiya station, about one hour - buses only leave about once every 2 hours. Some buses from Tokyo station will also go to Kyukamura Fuji (via Fujinomiya station), which is right at the lake.
Take bus 37 from the station or Sengen Taisha shrine and get off when you see the big yellow CoCo's sign (which is a Japanese family restaurant). Hananoyu is the big building with the floral mural on it. Has a variety of indoor and outdoor baths (including tea baths, wine bath, sulphur bath, bubbly bath, Jacuzzi, salt water bath, and more), sauna rooms with TV. Provides shampoo, conditioner, body wash, razors, toothbrushes and more. Free massage chairs and internet access. TV/Nap room - each chair has its own TV with speakers in the headrest. Restaurants, exercise machines, hair salon. Spa treatments available for extra cost.
On the Asagiri plateau, 40 minutes by bus from Fujinomiya JR station.
Fujinomiya is famous for its own version of Yakisoba (やきそば) -- check out any of the small shops with the big Yakisoba flag outside (usually orange in colour). There are several near the station. Some will cook on the table right in front of you. One characteristic is the thick, chewy noodles, some are made by the "Marumo" food factory right in the city. The other characteristic is ground meat, called ‘Nikukasu’ in Japanese. Yakisoba is one of the pride of Shizuoka. Considered "B-Grade Gourmet" - a term originated from the 1980s - which describes a variety of Japanese comfort food usually found in casual restaurants or sold as street food.
