The race takes place on the last Sunday of Carnival and is repeated on the following Tuesday, while Monday is marked by "Su lunis de sa pudda". The event takes place on dirt tracks that serve as the setting for a wild and dangerous horse race. The participants—all of whom must be from Lussurgiu—compete in groups of two or three riders, showcasing their equestrian skill, their form while riding, and their ability to keep their horses composed along the winding course. "Su lunis de sa pudda" (literally "the Monday of the hen") is a test of skill that involves decapitating a hen—formerly a live bird, now replaced by a dummy—while mounted on a horse at full gallop; the target is hung from a string halfway along the course.
