the capital of the North Lombok Regency, small city in the northwest, lies at the foot of Mount Rinjani's slopes, the two nearby peninsulas of Medana and Sire are home to some of the best resort and luxury villa destinations on the island

Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani (Gunung Rinjani) is an active volcano and a national park in Lombok and one of the largest mountains in Indonesia. On a clear day you can see breathtaking views from the summit.

the gateway village to an arduous trek up Mount Rinjani.

Bangsal

Bangsal is a tiny little port in northwestern Lombok, about 1 km away from the town of Pemenang. It's strictly a transfer point on the way to and from the Gili Islands, and few people hang around here any longer than necessary.

UnderstandNorth Lombok is dominated by the 3,726 m Mount Rinjani, an active stratovolcano. Rinjani is also the second highest volcano in Indonesia, second only to Mount Kerinci on Sumatra and is Indonesia's third highest peak.

TalkIn northern Lombok the people speak in local dialects of the indigenous Bahasa Sasak language of the Sasak peoples of Lombok. Bahasa Indonesian is spoken by many people especially the younger generations.

BuyIn and around Sembalun Lawang and in Bayan you can purchase unique and high-quality hand-woven cloth.

EatThe area has quite limited facilities catering to tourists and those are centred about Senaru and Sembalun and Tetebatu to the immediate south.

DrinkThere are few licensed premises such as hotels and some restaurants that serve alcohol in the north Lombok region. The north of Lombok is a quiet and often conservative area.

Stay safeRinjani park access requires payment of a fee and climbing should not be attempted without registration and an accredited guide. Please see the Rinjani article for more information on this.

ConnectNorth Lombok has varying terrain and land use from small towns to remote mountain peaks and valleys. Accordingly, mobile telephonary varies from to patchy to non-existent.
