Matabari; Tripureswari Temple
One of the 51 Shakti Peethas and Tripura's most important pilgrimage sites. Maharaja Dhanya Manikya constructed the present temple in 1501. Its form resembles a traditional Bengal hut and is sometimes compared with the shape of a tortoise, giving rise to the name Koorma Peetha. The approach contains stalls selling flowers, offerings and the local milk sweet known as peda. Dress respectfully and expect extensive queues during Diwali.
A sacred lake forming part of the Matabari temple complex. It contains fish and freshwater turtles revered by devotees. Keep plastic and food packaging away from the water, do not fish or enter the lake, and follow local instructions concerning animal feeding.
Bhuvaneswari Temple
A 17th-century temple built by Maharaja Govinda Manikya, probably between 1660 and 1675. Its architecture combines the curved roof form of a Bengal temple with decorative towers and floral motifs. Rabindranath Tagore used the temple and the neighbouring royal setting in Rajarshi and Bisarjan. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Udaipur Rajbari; Puran Rajbari
Ruins of the former royal complex used by the Manikya rulers when Udaipur was Tripura's capital. Little of the palace remains intact, but the site provides historical context for Bhubaneswari Temple and the works of Rabindranath Tagore. Avoid climbing unstable masonry.
Gunabati Mandir Gucchha
A compact group of three 17th-century temples. The principal temple is associated with Maharani Gunabati and an inscription dating to 1668. The monuments display the curved-roof temple style characteristic of historic Tripura and are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
A 155-hectare forest recreation area established in 1995. It contains walking paths, gardens, picnic areas and woodland vegetation. Facilities have included a treehouse, children's areas and tourist log huts, but individual activities may close for maintenance.
A straightforward local option for snacks and quick meals in the central commercial area.
A convenient stop for pilgrims and visitors around Matabari. Opening and meal availability may depend on temple crowds and the season.
A local guesthouse and restaurant serving simple meals. Confirm that the published number and dining arrangements remain current before making a special journey.
A Tripura Tourism property operated under lease. Its central location is useful for the lakes, markets and transport services. Contact the current operator to confirm room rates, meals, air conditioning, hot water and accepted payment methods.
Gunabati Tourist Lodge
A Tripura Tourism property convenient for pilgrims and early-morning temple visits. Confirm current availability and facilities directly, particularly during Diwali.
Forest accommodation associated with Tepania Eco Park. It offers a quieter setting than central Udaipur but is less convenient without private transport. Confirm booking status, park access, meals and check-in arrangements before travelling.
