Chandannagar (Bengali: চন্দননগর Chondonnogor, French: Chandernagor), formerly Chandernagore, is a small city in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, India. Situated along the banks of the river Hooghly, the city has been able to maintain a separate identity different from all other cities and abide by her own characteristics. The "City of Liberty" has always attracted people from all over the world due to her indescribable beauty. Though the total area is a meagre 19 square kilometers having a population of only over 150 thousand, she has managed to maintain a distinct place not only on the map of India but also on that of the world.

One was on the north side on the way to Chinsurah, and the other was on the south side on the way to Bhadreswar. Only the southern gate survives out of the two. The gate bears an inscription with the coat of arms and the French motto liberté, egalité, fraternité, meaning "liberty, equality, fratermity".

Despite struggling in childhood, he gained a lot of wealth by his trade to the French, as well as Malaysia, Rangoon (present-day Yangon), Trinidad, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Egypt and Mauritius. As a philanthropist, he opened free schools and pharmacies, supplied free food grains and also sponsored pilgrimage. He also served as the mayor of Chandannagar as well as a judge in the local court.
