Monemvasia is one of Greece’s most dramatic and atmospheric destinations — a medieval fortress town carved into a huge rock rising from the sea off the coast of Laconia in the southeastern Peloponnese. Often called the “Gibraltar of the East,” it is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, hiding a remarkably preserved Byzantine and Venetian town within its walls.
