A short drive from Kalavryta along a winding mountain road, Agia Lavra Monastery is best known for its role in the Greek War of Independence. While the buildings themselves are relatively plain, the small museum contains a worthwhile collection of artefacts, including Byzantine manuscripts, crosses, icons, and embroideries. Earlier finds range from Mycenaean and classical pieces to medieval relics. The setting in the hills adds to its appeal as an easy cultural stop.
The Agia Lavra is an Eastern Orthodox monastery near Kalavryta, Achaea, Greece. It was built in 961 AD, on Chelmos Mountain, at 961 metres (3,153 ft) above sea level, and can be described as the symbolic birthplace of modern Greece. It stands as one of the oldest monasteries in the Peloponnese.

Housed in the former school building, this moving museum documents the destruction of the town in December 1943.
About 10 km from Kalavryta, the ruined Castle of Kalavryta crowns a steep hill above the valley, reached by a demanding footpath. Once an important Frankish stronghold, it later passed between Latin, Greek, and Hospitaller control. Today only modest remains survive, including a keep and cisterns, but the sweeping views toward Mega Spilaio are superb. Local legend also points to the “Queen’s Rock,” from which a princess is said to have leapt to escape capture.
A unique cave system with tiered lakes and impressive formations.
Perched dramatically on a sheer cliff about 18 km from Kalavryta, Mega Spilaio (“Great Cave”) is one of Greece’s most striking monasteries. The current buildings are largely modern, rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1934, though the original cave sanctuary still survives. The highlight is the small museum, housing illuminated Gospel manuscripts (11th–12th centuries), icons, and richly decorated liturgical objects. Tradition also associates the monastery with an ancient icon attributed to St Luke.
