Karaga is the capital of Karaga District in the Volta Basin region of Ghana. It’s a small, predominantly Dagomba farming town about 60km northeast of Tamale. It’s known as the gateway to eastern Dagbon, with a large traditional palace, a busy periodic market, and easy access to rural villages.
Local spots serving pito (traditional millet beer) in calabashes, and zomkom (sweet-sour millet drink).
The town's beating heart. Traders come from Tamale, Yendi, and surrounding villages to sell fresh produce, livestock, and household items. Bring small bills in Ghana cedis and be prepared to bargain.
The main way in is by shared taxi or tro-tro from Tamale Station. The road is partly paved, partly laterite. In the dry season, it takes 1.5 - 2.5 hours. In rainy season, allow 3-4 hours. Cost is 100-115 GH₵ (Aug 2026).
