Bean porridge
Often eaten for breakfast, this is a slow-cooked, savory porridge made from local beans and sometimes millet. It is incredibly filling and designed to sustain farmers and traders through long days
A highly nutritious, steamed bean pudding made from black-eyed pea flour. It has a unique, slightly smoky aroma and a firm texture. Locals slice it up and serve it simply with a splash of hot shea butter or vegetable oil, sprinkled with spicy chili powder (Kankam / Yaji).
Thick, mashed rice molded into balls and submerged in a rich, creamy peanut butter soup layered with local spices and meat.
Suya
Skewered kebabs of beef or goat meat coated in a fiery, spiced peanut rub and grilled over open charcoal flames. You will find these sizzling at roadside stands across town as evening sets in.
Lamugee
A cooling, spicy drink popular across the northern region. While similar to Zomkom in its heavy use of ginger and cloves, Lamugin is traditionally made with a base of soaked, blended rice instead of millet. It is served ice-cold and packs a fiery ginger punch that is highly revitalizing on hot Sahelian afternoons.
The vast savannah plains surrounding Hamile are studded with ancient baobab trees. Locals harvest the dry, powdery white pulp from the baobab pods and mix it with water and sugar to create a thick, tangy, pale-yellow juice. It tastes naturally sour—resembling a mix of citrus and pear—and is packed with vitamin C.
Bisap
Brought across the border by Burkinabe traders, this deeply refreshing drink is made by boiling the pods of the tamarind tree. It is often brewed alongside dried hibiscus leaves (Bissap) or served on its own over ice, offering a beautifully sharp, sweet-and-sour flavor profile.
Look closely in the artisan stalls for intricate, handmade silver rings, heavy metal bangles, and amulets brought down by nomadic traders from further north in the Sahel.
The local markets feature fascinating stalls dedicated to traditional West African herbs, roots, tree barks, and specialized clay blocks used for holistic remedies.
You can often find local instrument makers selling hand-carved wooden flutes, local percussion shakers, and small stringed instruments unique to the Sissala and Dagaaba cultures.
Local artisans are experts at upcycling. You can find durable sandals made from recycled vehicle tires or uniquely decorated storage containers crafted from repurposed metal and oil drums.
