Görlitz is Germany's easternmost town. It sits across the Neiße River from its Polish sister city of Zgorzelec. It is very well preserved, and survived the Second World War more or less intact. A lot of money has been invested to restore the city's old town, making it one of the best preserved towns in Central Europe.

Pfarrkirche St. Peter und Paul
A spectacular Gothic church from the end of 15th century.
One example of this rich architectural heritage, the Schönhof is one of the oldest civic renaissance buildings in Germany. It now houses a Museum of Silesian History.

a museum dedicated to the history of Silesia.
Decent Polish/Silesian cuisine at affordable prices. Somewhat ignored by the tourist masses despite its central location.
Campground, hostel and cultural center with outdoor bar and modern facilities on the premises of a former cold storage from Communist times. The hostel rooms have been created in old GDR garages, whereas sanitary and cooking facilities are provided via modern container buildings. Great atmosphere, although the place can feel quiet when no event is taking place. Also offers a free "alternative" city map and has a small store to buy essentials (if you can find a staff member).
By train
The city of Dresden is a hub in train transport in eastern Saxony. Regional trains run frequently and take around one hour.
By car
Görlitz is on the European Route E40, which in Germany is called motorway A4, coming from Cologne via Chemnitz and Dresden.
By tram
Two tram lines connect the suburbs with the city centre. The outer regions of the suburbs are 5-6 km from the city centre. A tram ride there takes about 15 min.40, a day ticket is €3 (2014).
