Spread out on both sides of the border between Gambia and Senegal the stone circles are thought to have been erected around the 8th century to mark grave sites. There are about 1,000 circles with one major concentration at the Gambian side which most visitors see. The stone circles were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006.

From Kuntaur just southwest of Wassu (but probably other places too), you can get a boat trip a few kilometres up river to the Baboon Islands on the Gambia River to see, among other things, chimpanzees. The islands are rich in animal life and lucky visitors will see many types of animals, including hippos and a plethora of birds.
