The Citadel of Verdun is a 17th-century fortification located in Verdun, in the Meuse department of the Grand Est region, France. Engineered in part by the military architect Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, the property remains an active military installation. While the main surface facility continues to be administered by the military, its extensive underground tunnel network is open to the public as a historical museum detailing the site's strategic role during the First World War.
Verdun Cathedral
Consecrated in 1147 but built on the site of an earlier church. The 12th century Lion Door on the north side has a lavishly decorated tympanum. The whole building was heavily restored in the 18th century.
The Episcopal Palace of Verdun is an 18th-century landmark and major cultural destination located adjacent to Verdun Cathedral in Verdun, France. Designed by royal architect Robert de Cotte, the classical estate is classified as a historic monument and serves as the home of the Centre Mondial de la Paix, des Libertés et des Droits de l'Homme (World Center for Peace, Freedom and Human Rights).
As a primary visitor site within Verdun's historical district, the complex features grand classical architecture, high windows, and restored period reception rooms. Interactive and historical exhibits focus on European conflict history, human rights, and Franco-German reconciliation, highlighted by artifacts such as an authentic segment of the Berlin Wall. The location also functions as an active host for temporary exhibitions, cultural events, concerts, and international conferences.
Verdun Memorial
Verdun's famous train station (Gare de Verdun) was built by Eiffel in 1868 and was turned into a military hospital from 1914-1916. It is a functioning train station today, with service by SNCF.
