The settlement hill of Athribes used to be outside of what is now the city. Due to the growth of the city, the archaeological site is now in the north of Banhā. However, the area of the ancient capital of the 10th nome (province) of Lower Egypt (about 1500 BCE) has not yet been systematically excavated. To the west of the area are the remains of the ancient Egyptian temple of Chentechtai.
Athribis was an ancient city in Lower Egypt. It is located in present-day Tell Atrib, just northeast of Benha on the hill of Kom Sidi Yusuf. The town lies around 40 km north of Cairo, on the eastern bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile. It was mainly occupied during the Ptolemaic, Roman, and Byzantine eras.
