Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is an internationally important wetland in North Costa Rica, near the border with Nicaragua. Its seasonal lagoon, flooded forests, marshes and the Río Frío support one of Costa Rica's richest concentrations of waterbirds, together with monkeys, sloths, caimans, turtles and the unusual tropical gar known locally as gaspar.

Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Mixto Caño Negro
The principal public entrance to the refuge, with ranger facilities, parking, restrooms, information, elevated paths, a dock and access to the observation tower. Flooding or maintenance may affect individual facilities.
An approximately 18-m tower overlooking the Río Frío, La Capilla Lagoon and the larger Caño Negro or Llano Grande lagoon. On exceptionally clear days, several volcanoes may be visible. Platforms have capacity limits, so follow ranger instructions and do not crowd the upper levels.
Sendero Los Chocuacos
An approximately 800-m elevated path across the wetland. It provides views toward the Río Frío, Las Cubas and Mónico lagoons and is useful for observing birds, monkeys, reptiles and aquatic vegetation without taking a boat. Sections can become slippery in rain.
Laguna Caño Negro; Llano Grande
A broad, shallow seasonal lagoon surrounded by marsh and flooded forest. Its visible extent changes dramatically with rainfall and river levels. Waterbirds may gather in enormous numbers as the wetland contracts during the dry season.
