Sitio Arqueológico Monte Verde
One of the most influential archaeological sites in research into the peopling of the Americas. Organic material, wooden structures, tools, food remains and a human footprint were preserved in waterlogged peat. Most archaeological deposits are covered and are not directly visible.
A wooden interpretive shelter inaugurated in January 2026. Its curved structural form references the ancient dwellings proposed by archaeologists, while panels introduce the settlement, environment and archaeological discoveries. It is a modest open pavilion rather than a complete visitor centre.
MuPA
The municipal historical museum has a room devoted to Monte Verde, developed with assistance from the Fundación Monte Verde. Its interpretation provides considerably more archaeological context than an unguided visit to the rural site. Confirm hours around holidays.
By taxi or organized excursion
A taxi, hired car or prearranged heritage excursion is the most practical option for visitors without their own vehicle.
By public transport
Rural buses may serve communities around Trapén, Colonia El Gato or the Route V-830 junction, but there is no dependable, clearly published visitor service directly to the archaeological pavilion.
By air
The nearest airport is El Tepual International Airport (PMC), west of Puerto Montt. A taxi or rental car is required for the onward journey.
The public visitor area is explored on foot. Distances around the pavilion and viewpoint are short, but surfaces may include wet grass, mud, gravel and uneven ground.
