The Mount Cougal area of the park is approximately 20 km (12 mi) inland from Currumbin. It started in 1938 with an area of 142 hectares that was protected and over time it has grown to 811 hectares. In 1990 the area was merged with Springbrook National Park. The area is named for Mount Cougal, which is located within the park, just on the Queensland side of the New South Wales border. The mountain has two peaks, called the East and West Peaks, and rises to 694 m above sea level.
The Natural Bridge is a naturally formed rock arch over Cave Creek, a tributary of the Nerang River. It was formed by a waterfall that breached a cave and then left a rock arch.
