An open-air museum centred around the town's former copper mine, stemmed when copper was first found in the 1840s. At its height, it was once the largest metal mine in Australia. Both guided tours and self-guided walks are available, but tours are available from the Burra Heritage Passport (next to visitor centre). Since 2024, it has been on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage along with nearby Moonta as part of the Australian Cornish Mining Sites.
